How to Take Good Care of Yourself during the Coronavirus Pandemic

Self-care is how you take your power back.

Stay active.  It’s pretty well known that exercise is really wise for both our mental and physical health. There’s a pile of various types of exercise you can do from home, thanks to YouTube and apps. Take 10 to be zen.  When we’re stressed about something (such as coronavirus), our thinking tends to speed up. Taking 11 minutes or so to practice mindfulness can assist produce a sense of calmness. If meditation isn’t for you, attempt doing an everyday activity in a mindful way – in other words, put aside distractions and focus fully on one tiny task. For example, while you’re having a cup of coffee, pay attention to your senses (the fragrance of the coffee, the taste, the warmth of the cup in your hand).

Chat with your mates. Even if an in-person meet-up is off the table, try to stay in touch with your mates via Messenger, text, FaceTime, WhatsApp, or a good old fashioned phone call. Ask them how they’re feeling and share your own experience if you emotion safe to do so. You could even start a group chat where each friend shares one wise thing that happened in their day.

Make a homemade meal. Good nutrition is always necessary, but during stressful times there’s nothing better than a healthy, tasty homemade meal – especially if you made it by yourself. You could ask a buddy or family member for their favorite recipe, or check out Taste’s easy recipes section.

For many humans, it may be challenging to get some ingredients at the moment. If you’re running low or not able to get particular things, it’s totally okay to keep it really simple. You could also get creative with substitutions or Google ‘[ingredient] substitute’ for better ideas.

Take a break from the news. Between the social media and news, we’re all feeling saturated by coronavirus updates all time. It’s necessary to stay informed, but attempt to limit your media intake to a couple of times a day and apply trusted news sources. If you catch yourself turning to social media as you’re feeling lonely, take a snap and spend time on another activity. 

Make a music playlist. Music can make us feel so much brighter and wiser. Hop on Spotify and make a playlist with your favorite song list. You might make a group playlist and ask your buds to add a few of their favorite songs as well. If you need to get fancy, you could make some playlists for different vibes/mood.  (e.g. rainy day, feeling happy, etc.).

Declutter for some minutes. If you’re suddenly spending a lot more time at home, it can help to have an environment that feels vibrant to you. Instead of getting all Marie Kondo and trying to overhaul your whole space in a day, attempt decluttering for few minutes a day. Pick a shelf to start with, or pick up five things and discover a home for them.

Watch or read something uplifting. Distraction can be a good thing. Watch something that you find uplifting and permit yourself to zone out from what’s going on in the world.

If reading is your thing, then go to your bookshelf and pick an old favorite or something you’ve been meaning to get to for a while, or if you don’t have physical novels then e-books are a great help.

Give yourself the same attention and care that you give to other people and watch yourself bloom and in vibrant motion.

Learn something new. Have you wanted to learn a musical instrument or get into drawing? Now’s a great time to make a beginning. YouTube has another good free online tutorials for pretty much everything.

Limit media consumption to a sane amount. Only you understand what that means. But if you’re imagining about media, leap in the middle of the night, or heap on it until you feel slightly sick, it’s time to back off. Such continual checking does give us a sense of control, but beware. Even though the news moves swiftly, we do not require to consume media than a few times per day. Any more than that just develops more anxiety.

Get together virtually. This plan is catching on quickly and for good reason. A paid Zoom account (few dollars per month) gives the authority to have group meetings of up to 100.

Consider using this for virtual hangouts including dinner parties, book clubs, happy hours, coffee klatches, and tea parties. I’m exploring it’s an amazing way to stay in touch with faraway relatives—we’re ‘seeing’ each other more than ever suddenly. And if money’s tight, there’s always Skype and FaceTime.

Namaste nods work. Alternative greetings now abound as we’re no longer meant to kiss and hug.  The Namaste nod, and good to say, doing so when you greet someone makes your heart feel ever so much better. It feels right for these times somehow.

Walk-in natural space. Here’s what you love about going out into nature: there are no hard surfaces greeting with germs to hang on to, and it’s pretty easy to keep that critical three to seven-foot distance from others. Furthermore, a 2014 Finnish study found that strolling in a park or other natural setting for just some time provides good more stress relief than walking on city streets.

Have a good cry when you feel want to. We all understand—this is a scary situation. One wants to “keep tranquil and carry on,” yet the cost of suppressing our natural grief and fear is high. Far better to have a temporary meltdown, even in the privacy of our space, and then emerge clear-eyed and better able to cope. We will help ourselves and be better prepared to help other people. 

It’s okay to ask for help. Sometimes asking for help can be personal and small. Maybe we want someone to watch our kids while we go for a stress-relief run, or maybe we want a hug from a family member. Ask for what you want, and you’ll serve yourself and everyone else in the long run. It’s time for us to dissolve our differences and support each other big time, just as generations before us have done in an intensely difficult crisis.

Make certain your emergency supplies are up to date. I have to say, restoring our own stock and getting it organized with a written inventory gave you a tremendous sense of help. It dialed back your emotion of panic significantly.
If you can’t straight away purchase everything you’d like as supplies or your own funds are low, keep calm. For even now, as the Bay Area stays at home, we are permitted to grocery shop. I plan to gently restock in my nitrile gloves, mask in place, as the crowds diminish and the circumstance settles. I’ll also have my own little baggie of disinfecting mop for the shopping cart if the store’s supply is out.

Be compassionate with yourself and others. This is when human beings get tense, and tempers tend to run short. We often don’t perform up to expectations as we’re stressed. And yet, this is also when we want to practice kindness, loving towards ourselves and everyone else. We truly are doing the best we can, even if doesn’t look like it. So let’s give each other—and ourselves—a comfortable break. And yeah, presume yourself to be somewhat freaked out. That is very normal in highly abnormal circumstances. 

Ask yourself what you want right now. This question is fundamental, and it’s something we almost always forget to do. When you check in with yourself, you grasp matters that may surprise you. Try it right now. Put a hand on your heart and close your eyes and silently ask. Inspirational quotes of life lead your mind to tell you just what she or he wants.
Do you want a long, warm bath or to stop your work at home and take a long walk? Do you need to do yoga or meditate? To sit down and play with your children for a while, or get some good hugs? If you’re alone, do you want to FaceTime a dear bud, or give your mom a call? Whatever you want, give your best to honor that need. It will definitely assist you in the long way.
