Generated by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is a fictional personal detective. Holmes is better known for his deduction, proficiency with observation, logical reasoning, and forensic science that borders on the extravagant, which he employs when investigating cases for a wider variety of customers, involving Scotland Yard as referring to himself as a counseling detective in the story tales.
The first appearance in print in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, the character's popularity became extensive with the first series of short tales in The Strand Magazine, beginning within 1891, A Scandal in Bohemia, additional tales materialize from then, eventually totaling 56 short story narrative and four novels. All but one are set in the Edwardian or Victorian eras, between about 1914 and 1880. Most are unfolded by the character of Holmes's buddy and biographer Dr. John H. Watson, who normally go along with Holmes during his investigations and at the address of 221B Baker Street, London, and often shares quarters with him, where many of the tales start.
Though not the initial fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the famous one. By the 1990s there were already over 25,000 stage adaptations, television productions, films, and publications promoting the detective, and Guinness World Records register him as the most depicting literary human character in television and film history. Holmes's fame and popularity are such that many have faith him to be not a fictional character but a real human being. Numerous fan and literary societies have been founded on this simulation. Keen readers of the Holmes tales help develop the modern practice of fandom. The tales and character have had a lasting and profound impact on popular culture and mystery writing as a whole, with the original stories as well as thousands written by novelists other than Conan Doyle being modified into radio plays and stage, films, television, video games, and other media for over numerous years.
