ME TOO MOVEMENT Awakening Call

ME TOO MOVEMENT-Awakening Call

What is the Me Too movement? The Me Too movement is an attempt to impact social change, organized primarily through social media, where it’s often denoted as #MeToo. Originally found in 2006, it became prominent both in the mainstream in late 2017 and online, when some high-profile actresses opened up about their experiences with sexual harassment in the filmy sphere.
Since then, the movement has provided a source of unanimity for women from all backgrounds who have experienced sexual harassment, most often, though not always, committed by a male colleague.

Me Too movement founder: Tarana Burke. During the early years, an American social activist, Tarana Burke, start to apply the phrase “me too” on Myspace (the social networking platform) to spotlight the occurrence of sexual harassment, particularly as it targeted women of color.
Burke proclaims that the Me Too movement works on empowerment through empathy by showing the whole planet just how common sexual harassment is and by convincing survivors that they are not alone — and are pretty much supported.

Overview of the Movement's Successes

  • Empathetic for survivors that they are not alone
  • Created a powerful community where survivors feel like they have a voice
  • Demonstrated how widespread the problem is
  • Shifted social opinions and norms about the problem
  • Exposed faith systems that enable abuse
  • Progressed compassion for survivors
  • lead to concrete changes in policies and laws
  • Created avenues for survivors to share and speak up their stories
  • Broke the silence surrounding sexual bullying, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.
  • De-stigmatized the problem and made it safe for discussions
  • Lead to the incarceration or punishment of some powerful men
  • Highlighted the fact that action is needed to fix up anti-harassment policies
  • Prompted several states to ban non-disclosure agreements, which cover powerful persons hide their actions by buying the survivor's silence
  • Lead to expanded sexual harassment laws in New York and California
  • Lead to the adoption and creation of new legal standards by the International Labour Organization (10 countries have already ratified it)

The MeToo movement: An opportunity for positive change. In response to the #MeToo movement, we are witnessing a necessary and swift uptick in the frequency at which companies are implementing anti-discrimination and anti-harassment training; renovate policies governing employee conduct, both in and out of the job office; expand reporting methods for inappropriate behavior; dedicate additional resources for investigations; review protocols for responding to complaints of inappropriate conduct, and re-evaluating practices to impose disciplinary action in response to misconduct.

76% of the U.S Employees Say #Metoo Positively Impacted the Workplace Culture. The survey found that almost 74% of employed Americans say the #MeToo movement has covered to lessen the occurrence of sexual harassment in the workplace. 68% of employed Americans also say that the #MeToo movement has made the workers more vocal and empowered them to report sexual harassment at work.

The “MeToo” Movement signify signs of Positive influence on Workplace Sexual Harassment. The movement has led to numerous women publicly share their experiences of being sexually harassed in the working area by their seniors or co-workers. It has also had other tactile impacts since then. In January 2018, a bill was passed in the California legislature to expand the time limit to file a sexual harassment lawsuit to three years, up from the present one-year limitation. In addition, sexual assault disaster hotlines in the nation have reported a dramatic improvement in calls as a progressive number of victims reach out for help.

States are also introducing protections for more workers. New York expanded its sexual harassment law to help independent contractors in 2018 and in 2019, improved protections for domestic workers. California broadened its law in 2018 to offer protections for persons harassed in an expanded set of business relationships — including, notably, relationships with producers.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT. In May 2018, The New York Women's Foundation reported their Fund to Support the Me Too Movement and Allies, a $25M commitment over the next five years to provide support and funding survivors of sexual violence. CBS reported that it would be donating $20 million of former Chairman Les Moonves' severance to #MeToo in September 2018. Moonves was pushed to step down after several sexual misconduct accusations.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE. The hashtag has trended in at least 85 countries, including India, and the United Kingdom. Direct translations of #MeToo have been shared by Spanish speakers in Europe and South America and by Arabic speakers in the Middle East and Africa, while activists in Italy and France have created hashtags to convey the attitudes of the movement. Communicating alike experiences and sharing emotions in some form of togetherness connects people and can lead to the formation of a pattern of collective action. The campaign has help out survivors from around the ocean to share their stories, and name their perpetrators. The European Parliament ordered a session directly in response to the Me Too campaign, after it prompted allegations of abuse in Parliament and in the European Union's offices in Brussels.
